Math Exercises

Math at The Green Room

Since we have multiple grade levels and differing levels of mastery in math, Green Room students work on math individually. If you don't already have a preferred math curriculum, we recommend a Saxon math book. If your child is in grade 3 and up, we recommend pairing a Saxon math book with the NicoletheMathLady.com online instructor. This allows the student to have a physical book to work from as well as an online instructor that the student can view at any time and at their own pace. They can work from this at home and in the classroom. While in the classroom, the teacher will be there to help ensure they are on task and help answering any questions the students may have. For the younger grades (K-2) not using Nicole the Math Lady, there will be more instruction with possible group work depending on what book students use. Using Nicole the Math Lady will require the use of some type of internet linked device. The annual discounted price for Nicole the Math Lady is $50 if you order through The Green Room. To find placement tests and books to order visit nicolethemathlady.com. We know that Saxon does not fit every child's preferred learning style so, if you would like your student to use a different math curriculum during classroom math time, please make sure that you send the classwork with your student and clearly indicate to the teacher what you'd like the student to work on. Math time is for an hour each class day.

Most students have a strange, mixed relationship with their language arts classes. I know I did. On one hand, strong communication skills are crucial to success in life. On the other hand, ELA classes tended toward forgettable at best and something 'to be endured' at worst. Why have we turned vital skill acquisition into drudgery that repels genuine learning? English/ Language Arts with B. T. Higgins seeks to help students find their voice, craft their thoughts into words of substance and clarity, positively influence the world, and improve their circumstances. No more powerful tool exists for improving student well-being and growth than words. In this class, as we interact with the different modalities of language and skill development, I hope each student discovers what they have to offer the world. Their ideas and perspectives are valuable. Their words are priceless assets that they should learn to employ well. Course Description: English/ Language Arts with Ben Higgins is a comprehensive course designed to teach the five modalities of communication to students in grades 7-12. These modalities include writing, reading, speaking, listening, and thinking. The class meets the requirements set by the ELA public school curriculum and provides a creative approach to language arts education. Each week, students will complete a writing project and deliver a presentation on their work. Through a discussion-based learning model, students will engage in productive exchanges of ideas to refine their skills. Students are assessed on active participation, careful listening, and completion of their homework assignments. The course will cover American and world literature analysis, editing, grammar, revising, public speaking, and logical thinking. Curriculum: ALL NEW Writers Room Book 3 by B.T. Higgins (Cost $40. Mr. Higgins will pass the new textbook out on the first day of class. They must be purchased with cash, check, Venmo, or direct billing of your charter school, if applicable.) This class combines middle and high schoolers at south campus. Because of the potentially large number of students who want to take the class with Mr. Higgins, we have recruited a veteran homeschooling mom of 17 years, Tirsa Myler, who will be helping students in smaller groups within the class. B.T. Higgins is an accomplished author of numerous books catering to middle-grade readers, as well as two non-fiction works addressing fatherhood and educational improvement. (Check out his newest work at bthiggins.substack.com). With a wealth of experience as a veteran classroom teacher spanning over fourteen years, B.T. also brings over a decade's worth of expertise in teaching homeschoolers of all ages. Leveraging his authorial background, B.T. is enthusiastic about infusing language arts education with creativity, relevance, and real-life connections. He is also a full time homeschool father.

Wednesdays 9 am to 12 pm

In 1905, George Santayana wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” in his book titled, The Life of Reason: Reason in Common Sense. The idea was paraphrased by Winston Churchill in 1948. He told the House of Commons, “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” Since then the maxim has been rephrased and recycled by many. When I heard it in high school history class it had been changed to, “If you don't know history, you are doomed to repeat it.” I remember it well because my father was my history teacher. I had to pay attention. For some teachers, the most important things to remember are dates. 1905. 1945. Like thumbtacks pushed into the timeline of history. Dates. Dates. More Dates. Others emphasize the names. George Santayana and Winston Churchill are interesting people to study and learn from but I think history class is way more than that. It is about following the threads of causality through time. From one generation to the next. From one empire to the next, seeing how the past threads global stories through history to the “here and now.” In this class, we will search for the connections between the dates, individuals, and empires. Finding causality like detectives, historians, and researchers. Once we know how people lived, students are offered the crucial choice. How will I live in light of history? The next chapter of world history is being written right now. How is the story going to proceed? Students need to view history as vivid and real links in a chain of causes and effects. Not just wars, battles, and famines isolated from each other. In World History with B.T. Higgins, we will study the past with an analytical eye and critical mind that asks, “How then will I live?” Course Description: World History with B.T. Higgins is a comprehensive course designed to guide students through history using a special toolbox of modern research tools. It is geared for students in grades 7-12. The class meets the requirements set by the Social Studies: World History public school curriculum and provides a constructive, analytical approach. Each week, students will complete two hours of research homework on the topics that will be discussed during the next class period. Each week they are responsible for completing the assigned research and presenting their work to the class. We will combine the research tools of the future with the brains of our student historians to construct the stories that make up world history. Through a discussion-based learning model, students will engage in productive exchanges of ideas to refine their skills. Students will be assessed on active participation, careful listening, and completion of their homework assignments. By the conclusion of the course, students will have learned valuable research methods and processes, which will help them excel in school and compete in the rapidly changing job market of the future in addition to gaining an understanding of world history. Curriculum: World History Survival Guide by B.T. Higgins (Cost $40. Mr. Higgins will pass the new textbook out on the first day of class. They must be purchased with cash, check, Venmo, or direct billing of your charter school, if applicable.) Bio: B.T. Since we have multiple grade levels and differing levels of mastery in math, Green Room students work on math individually. If you don't already have a preferred math curriculum, we recommend a Saxon math book paired with the NicoletheMathLady.com online instructor. This allows the student to have a physical book to work from as well as an online instructor that the student can view at any time and at their own pace. They can work from this at home and in the classroom. While in the classroom, the teacher will be there to help ensure they are on task and help answering any questions the students may have. Using Nicole the Math Lady will require the use of some type of internet linked device. The annual discounted price for Nicole the Math Lady is $50 if you order through The Green Room. Go to nicolethemathlady.com for placement tests and to find out the correct books to order. We know that Saxon does not fit every child's preferred learning style so, if you would like your student to use a different math curriculum during classroom math time, please make sure that you send the classwork with your student and clearly indicate to the teacher what you'd like the student to work on. Math time is for an hour each class day. Tirsa Myler Bio: Tirsa is a mother of six who has homeschooled for 17 years. She loves teaching and discovering the best ways to engage students using their learning style. She has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and has worked as a nurse for almost 20 years. She thinks math is fun, but also enjoys reading, fiber arts and being outdoors.

Principles of Success
with Jeremy Anderson
(Thursdays: 6th - 12th)
curiositybuilderak@gmail.com
907-441-1791

This course empowers students to take charge of their lives by applying proven success strategies from Jack Canfield’s The Success Principles. Through discussion, personal reflection, team activities, and real-world application, students will develop skills in goal setting, personal responsibility, mindset, leadership, and resilience. These skills have been "scientifically proven", if you will, by the thousands of people who have used them to achieve incredible results in every field of human endeavor. By the end of the course, students will have created a personalized “Success Portfolio” to carry forward into high school, college, and beyond. Bio: Jeremy Anderson grew up in Anchorage with his 7 siblings. He was homeschooled his entire K-12 educational career and is currently helping his wife as she homeschools their 6 children. Jeremy has a bachelor's degree in Biophysics and a Master's degree in educational leadership both from Brigham Young University, Provo. He has spent 11 years as an entrepreneur and small business owner, visited Africa, lived two years in Brazil, and speaks Brazilian Portuguese. If he wanted to sound cool in a bio his answer to "What one person alive today would most like to have a conversation with?" Would be "You." And if he were being honest, it would be Russel M. Nelson, or CoRene Anderson, depending on the day.
