Mondays 9 am - 12 pm

Ms. Elspeth’s immersive World History will be an exploration of signifiant events from the middle ages through the beginning of the modern era. It will focus on the years 1600-1900 and will act as the rudder to guide more explorations in both her science and language arts classes at The Green Room. This period in world history is exciting because so many discoveries were made and technologies created now that travel and communication became easier than ever before.  For the first time, countries and people weren’t isolated and they exchanged valuable knowlege. The conflicts and cooperation from this time period primed us for more recent history and current events.   The Story of the World Volume 3 from the Well Trained Mind will be our guide and springboard to further exploration.  The activities we do in the classroom will bring history out of the pages and into our lived experiences. As we immerse ourselves in the culture of the era, it will take history from a collection of facts and dates to a story that flows together and stays with the student.  Be prepared for hands on activities, supplemental reading, individual and group work. Also be prepared to think more deeply about the patterns in history and how we can apply these lessons to our lives today. Bio: Elspeth Allen has a bachelors degree in physics. She rounded out her education in her family's dance studio and the piano; competing on the national and international level. She has been homeschooling her own children as well as teaching in co-ops for over a decade. Elspeth loves teaching to the individual strengths and weaknesses of students both one on one and in a group. Her enthusiasm for learning and to connect learning across many disciplines through her creative approach makes classes with her an experience that is difficult to replicate.

A number of significant scientific discoveries were made from 1600-1900. Therefore, science will be incorporated into world history as we discover the scientific advances of these early modern times.
This will be a scientific survey class where students will learn about astronomy with Galileo, the laws of motion and optics with Newton, life on the cellular level with Louis Pasteur, electricity with Thomas Edison, and more. The scientific method will be employed with frequent experiments in class to discover the inner workings of these important principles. You won’t find these experiences in any book as Elspeth Allen is developing her own teacher-designed experiences. Students will also learn to write and communicate scientific ideas. Students will work with a partner to bring what we’ve learned together to design their own experiment and participate in a second-semester science fair. English Language Arts will also be integrated into this immersive study of early modern times with Ms. Elspeth. How were so many discoveries and ideas shared with the rest of the world? Through the power of the written and printed word— language arts!  We will experience the power of the written works from the early modern times as well as employing our own words and ideas to affect our world today. Students will learn the timeless components that make compelling and entertaining stories such as plot, character, setting, and theme.  We will be reading a fiction book together in class each semester to study how these are used to make a great book. Students will also choose a book to read at home on their own.  As a class we will improve essential reading comprehension and grammar skills as we learn to write compelling stories of our own.
In addition to fiction writing, we also need to be able to communicate for the real, nonfiction world.  To this end our class will have a monthly class newspaper to which each student will contribute.   Students will also become proficient at writing essays including the 5-paragraph essay that is often required for tests and colleges. Students will learn what makes a good argument and how both storytelling and facts work together to shape minds. Since we have multiple grade levels and differing levels of mastery in math, Green Room students work on math individually. If you don't already have a preferred math curriculum, we recommend a Saxon math book paired with the NicoletheMathLady.com online instructor. This allows the student to have a physical book to work from as well as an online instructor that the student can view at any time and at their own pace. They can work from this at home and in the classroom. While in the classroom, the teacher will be there to help ensure they are on task and help answering any questions the students may have. Using Nicole the Math Lady will require the use of some type of internet linked device. The cost of this program is included in the cost of the class. Go to nicolethemathlady.com for placement tests and to find out the correct books to order. We know that Saxon does not fit every child's preferred learning style so, if you would like your student to use a different math curriculum during classroom math time, please make sure that you send the classwork with your student and clearly indicate to the teacher what you'd like the student to work on. Math time is for an hour each class day. Bio: Bio: Elspeth Allen has a bachelors degree in physics. This year's high school language arts class will teach writing skills through historical journalism. The curriculum "Byline" takes 9th–12th graders on a wild quest for stories left untold in the forgotten corners of history. As they step into the role of a 1930s-era newspaper reporter, students train under Editor-in-Chief, Daniel Schwabauer, who takes students under his wings to teach them everything he knows. Their in-person teacher will act as a writing coach for each student. Along the way, and before they even realize what they are doing, students learn to write great essays. Byline combines writing instruction with intriguing historic people and events to not only equip students with essay-writing skills, but to help them enjoy the journey. Students will study the work of great journalists of the past including Ernest Hemmingway, Jack London, and Mark Twain. Students will learn: - critial thinking - separating fact from fiction - writing intelligently without jargon - following leads - supporting evidence They will write the following types of essays: - expository - descriptive - persuasive - narrative The class will be taught by Leigh Sloan and/or another qualified teacher to be anncounced. Each student will need a Byline Group Student Kit ($128 per student). The kit includes a streaming subscription (12 months of personalized access to the video lessons), the Training Manual (workbook), The Reporter's Notebook, and 2 printed newspapers See the link to view to sample lessons here: https://clearwaterpress.com/byline/sample-lessons/

In this course, students will explore their creativity through unique and engaging lessons that teach the principles of art and design. Art is crucial for young minds. It teaches them pattern recognition, fine motor skills, and learning to appreciate the world around them, among other things. Through projects that guide them through the color wheel by including things they love, to Chinese vase paintings that help them identify patterns, design, and symmetry. We will also study some artists and learn about their style and techniques, and create our own projects inspired by them. For example, for one lesson, we will learn about Eric Carle (the author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and his unique approach to collage and color, and create our own hungry caterpillars and butterflies. Each project will be graded on a 4-point system with 5-6 different categories depending on the lesson. Creating a standard, no matter the skill, and providing structure and clear pathways for growth. Here are some basic categories for the grading system that will be in place:  Following directions, effort & participation, craftsmanship, creativity & original Idea, use of art concepts, and clean up & behavior. Each class will start with a 5-10 minute drawing prompt to warm up their imaginations, then we will ease into the lesson of the day. Bio: Olivia Maiorano is a born and raised Alaskan living in Chugiak with her husband and baby boy. She is a local artist, running her own small business for over 4 years.
